What if my flight is operated by more than one airline?
On 1 April 2011, a new IATA (International Air Transport Association) resolution on baggage allowances took effect for journeys which include more than one carrier on the same ticket.

When your transportation includes more than one airline the baggage allowances are now determined according to which carrier is considered the "most significant carrier" as according to Resolution 302 from IATA. These rules are complex. However, if you are flying with Icelandair, your "most significant carrier" will generally be the airline which flies the longest leg of your trip, or else the airline which takes you on the first international leg of your journey. In some cases, this may mean that the baggage allowance of a carrier other than Icelandair will apply to the whole journey or to some part of it.

These rules apply only to checked bags and excess charges on them, and do not apply to carry-on baggage. Customers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the baggage allowances given in their tickets. Please contact your sales agent for information.

What is the airline's liability and how can I make a claim?
If any of your checked baggage is missing or damaged on arrival at your destination airport, please report this to an Icelandair staff member or representative immediately. Any claims must be submitted in writing within seven days. As the carrier's liability for baggage
loss, delay or damage is limited, passengers are advised to obtain private travel insurance. All claims are subject to proof of damage.

What should I not include in my checked baggage?
In baggage which you are going to check in, you are advised not to include any fragile or perishable items, money, keys, jewellery, electronic equipment, precious metals or silverware, negotiable instruments or securities, business documents, valuable articles, medication
or medical papers, passports or other identification documents or samples.

Passengers travelling to/from the United States are advised to take note of the TSA (US Transportation Security Administration) restrictions on locking checked-in baggage. Also, lighters and matches are now entirely prohibited on flights to and from the USA, both in checked baggage and as carry-on items. Full details can be found on the TSA website.

As a general rule, airline carriers reserve the right to refuse the carriage of more than the free baggage allowance on the same flight as the passenger. It is therefore of great importance that the carrier is advised in advance of baggage which is in excess of the free allowance in order to allow for special arrangements, such as the booking of necessary space on other aircraft as cargo.
