Located on the Spokane River in eastern Washington State, 20 miles (32km) west of the Washington-Idaho border and 271 miles (436km) east of Seattle, Spokane (spo'kæn) is the second largest city in the state, with a population of about 200,000.

The city’s name derives from the Native American tribe known as the Spokane, which means “Children of the Sun”. White explorers met this tribe for the first time at the Spokane Falls in 1810. The name is certainly appropriate, since the sun is said to shine in Spokane for 260 days each year. The fur trading post established at Spokane Falls in 1810 was the first long-term European settlement in Washington State.

Modern Spokane City is a fast growing commercial and administrative centre of Spokane County. It is a high-spirited town, thriving on the spectacular nature of the region, tourism and almost endless possibilities for outdoor recreation, sport and adventure in both summer and winter. The city itself has much to offer a flourishing art scene, powerful stage performances, live concerts, world-class museums and art galleries.
