So busy, so green and so refreshing

Hamburg is Germany’s second most populous city, with over 1.8 million inhabitants. Situated on the River Elbe about 100km inland, it is Germany’s biggest port city and Europe’s second largest. Surprisingly for a major transportation hub and a busy commercial and industrial centre, Hamburg is also Germany’s greenest city, famous for its parks, open green spaces, lakes, rivers and canals (there are 2,300 bridges in Hamburg, more than in Amsterdam or Venice).

Hamburg is an old town and you can learn something about its long history by visiting the Hamburg Museum of History (Museum für Hamburgische Ge¬schichte) or strolling along the streets of the Old Town, the Altstadt. You could start your walk from the Town Hall, the Rathaus. Be sure to take a look inside  the Michae¬liskirche (‘St Michael’s Church’).
To get to know the city even better, why not take a sightseeing cruise around the harbour and on Lake Alster in the city centre.

Sophisticated, exciting and home to all facets of life

Art lovers should visit the Hamburger Kunsthalle, which houses one of the best collections of European art from medieval times to the present. Others might wish to admire the flowers in the park Planten un Blomen or drop in on the animals in the world-famous Carl Hagenbeck Zoo.
Hamburg is renowned for its theatres and opera house, as well as having a vibrant pop and jazz scene. Lovers of classical music are in for a treat with Hamburg’s three symphonic orchestras and the great concert hall, the Laeiszhalle – Musikhalle Hamburg.

When the afternoon draws to a close you’ll find a lively and charming atmosphere and a great many restaurants, wine bars and pubs in the Grossneumarkt, Pöseldorf and Eppendorf districts. The St Pauli district is famous for all kinds of evening entertainment and a bustling nightlife. In the early 1960s, the not-yet world-famous Beatles played in several clubs around the legendary Reeperbahn, including the Indra and Kaiserkeller clubs.

  • Airport: The airport Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel is located 8km north of the city centre. A taxi drive to the centre takes 20-30 minutes. The airport bus runs from the airport to the city centre every 20 minutes and the journey takes 20-25 minutes.
  • Want to eat? There are more than 2,000 restaurants in Hamburg where you can immerse yourself in the cuisine of more than 40 different countries. Hamburg is famous for its seafood restaurants.
  • Want to shop? The main shopping streets in Hamburg are the Mönckebergstrasse and Spitalerstrasse (near the central rail station, the Hauptbahnhof), Jungfern¬stieg, Colonnaden, Neuer Wall, Grosse Bleichen and Gänsemarkt (on the southwest bank of the Binnen¬alster lake). There are shopping malls and warehouses in the city centre, including the Hanseviertel, Bleichenhof, Galeria, Alte Post, Hamburger Hof, Gänsemarkt Passage, Quarrée, Hamburger Straße and Alstertal Einkaufszentrum.
